The music industry can be a harsh place for up and coming independent artists who are trying to get their music heard by radio stations and deejays. Often times an artist will have exceptionally great music but unfortunately will get no airplay because of the way it is packaged. Preparing your music for the radio is similar to  h ow to package your music for feature considerations with the media and bloggers on popular websites , except for a few small details.

Servicing your record to the radio stations and DJs can be a bit different than servicing it to media and bloggers, more so in the sense that you must format your music a little differently. First, make sure that what you are sending out is a "DJ Service Pack", which is a zip file of your record(s) in studio quality AIFF format for best sound results. MP3 file format may also be used but the quality is not a good as AIIF, which means they are the 2nd preferred format, not the first. While making your zip file, make sure that you don't forget to include the clean, dirty, acapella and instrumental versions of your song. Also, properly label each track so that people are able to clearly identify each one, the one thing DJs and radio people hate is to see files labeled "track 01, track 02" etcetera. A properly labeled AIFF or MP3 file will include the name of the artist(s), name of the song and the version of the song that people are listening to.

Finally but definitely extra, DJ's and radio stations love what are called "drops" or "jingles", depending on your genre. A drop is a quick 10-15 second audio recording of the artist "shouting out" or "plugging" the dj or radio station and/or it's listeners. A jingle is typically used in reggae and dancehall and is similar to a drop but done song fashion.

Finally, when you have all your materials in the properly labeled zipfile, upload it to a digital transfer service like box.com or dropbox.com so that the person receiving the link to the file has the ability to preview the files inside of it before downloading if they wish. Once your file uploads you can pull the sharelink provided and share your record(s) with whoever you wish electronically.
